Overview
This article will help you to setup your Google Analytics tracking via Google Tag Manager.
Once these instructions have been completed, you will have tags setup in Google Tag Manager as in the following image:
This will publish your analytics reporting data into Google Analytics. This article assumes you already have a Google Analytics account.
GOOGLE ANALYTICS CONFIGURATION
Enable enhanced eCommerce reporting in Analytics
In Google Analytics, go to E-Commerce Settings and ensure “Enable Enhanced eCommerce Reporting” is set to ON.
GOOGLE TAG MANAGER (GTM) CONFIGURATION
The following steps are completed via Google Tag Manager. You will need to create a new GTM account if you do not have one.
Once you have a GTM account, you can either complete the following steps manually or you can import the GTM container located at: https://support.carcloud.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024791331-Google-Tag-Manager-GTM-container-import-file
Step 1. Add Universal Analytics tag
Click “New” to add a new tag and complete setup as in the following image. Click “Save Tag” when you are ready to proceed:
Step 2. Add user-defined variables
Overview - next stage is to add the required user-defined variables to they appear as in the following image. Click “Variables” to continue:
Step 3.1. Add "Event Action" variable
In User-Defined Variables, click “New” and add the Event Action variable as in the following image:
Step 3.2. Add "Event Category" variable
In User-Defined Variables, click “New” and add the Event Action variable as in the following image:
Step 3.3. Add "Non-Interaction Hit" variable
In User-Defined Variables, click “New” and add the Event Action variable as in the following image:
Step 4. Add trigger.
Click on the “Triggers” section and click “New” to add a new event as in the following image:
This will appear as follows:
Step 5. Add tag.
Click on “Tags” and click “New” to add a new one. Change "Track Type" to event and then complete information as in the following image. Note the tracking ID should be your actual Google Analytics tracking ID.
When you configure the tag, this will be entered as follows:
You can now enter your GTM container details into your website admin backend under the Analytics section:
Note DO NOT enter the Universal Analytics Code on this page, only enter the GTM Container details. As your analytics is tracked via GTM, if you also enter the Analytics code here your information will be tracked twice and cause data issues.
Your setup is now complete and you will be able to use Enhanced eCommerce Reporting in Google Analytics.
