What is a Category?
Categories are used to group and sort information on your website into different sections. For instance, if you feature a News section on your website formed from posts, you may categorize them into sections such as ‘New features/Updates’, ‘Destination advice’, ‘Offers’, etc.
It is worth noting that if no category is set, a default category will be set such as ‘Uncategorized’. Additionally, a post can be filed under multiple categories and can have tags and categories simultaneously.
How do I set a Category?
From your Posts, the main screen, select the pre-existing post you wish to add a category to or add a category during the creation process and thus select the Add new option on the left-hand side below posts. The process of adding a category is the same for both options.
A category can be selected from the All Categories or Most used option, or a new one can be applied by clicking +Add New Category which will display options such as this.
Simply type in the name of the category you wish to assign, and select a Parent Category if applicable. Once finished, select Add New Category and your post will now be filed under your chosen category.
How do I Add a new Category?
Firstly select the Posts icon on the left-hand side and click on Categories below this.
You will then be taken to a screen similar if not the same as the one below:
Simply type in the name of the category you wish to add in the Name bar, alter the slug if you want to and even set a parent, as categories can have a hierarchy.
You may also have the option to set a Description if your theme shows it. Once you have finished creating your new category, simply click the blue button on the bottom left of the page labeled Add New Category to complete the process.
